Best Outdoor Adventures Within 30 Minutes of Valrico

One of the underrated perks of living in Valrico is how quickly you can get to genuine wilderness. Not manicured parks with paved paths and drinking fountains -- actual trails through old-growth forest, spring-fed rivers, and conservation land where you might see a bald eagle or a river otter before you see another person.

Here are the best outdoor adventures within 30 minutes of Valrico, organized by what you want to do.

For Mountain Biking: Alafia River State Park

Distance from Valrico: 15 minutes south (14326 S County Rd 39, Lithia) Admission: $5 per vehicle

Alafia River State Park sits on reclaimed phosphate mining land, which means something rare for Florida: hills. Real hills. The International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) has rated the trails here, and they range from beginner-friendly fire roads to advanced single-track with drops, berms, and technical rock gardens.

The park has over 17 miles of mountain bike trails that loop through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and past 24 named lakes. It's one of the best mountain biking destinations in the entire state, and it's in our backyard.

Don't miss: The trails around Lake Rosita for intermediate riders. Challenging enough to be fun, scenic enough to make you forget you're in Hillsborough County.

For Swimming: Lithia Springs Park

Distance from Valrico: 12 minutes south (3932 Lithia Springs Rd, Lithia) Admission: $2 per vehicle (up to 8 people); $2 per person for swimming area

The spring-fed swimming area stays at about 72 degrees year-round. In July, when the air temperature is 95 and the humidity makes it feel like 108, that cold spring water is absolute heaven. The park also has a playground, volleyball courts, picnic areas, and fishing access along the Alafia River.

Pro tip: Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends. The parking lot fills up, and once it's full, the park closes to new visitors until people leave.

For Kayaking/Canoeing: Alderman's Ford Conservation Park

Distance from Valrico: 15 minutes east (100 Alderman's Ford Park Dr, Lithia) Admission: $2 per vehicle

Alderman's Ford is where the Alafia River flows over a limestone ford that settlers and cattle ranchers used for centuries. The paddling here is some of the most scenic in Tampa Bay: clear water, sandy bottom, overhanging oaks, and the occasional set of mild Class I rapids. The park also has several miles of hiking trails through bottomland forest and upland pine.

Best for: Intermediate kayakers and canoeists. The current is moderate and there are some rocky sections. Not ideal for first-time paddlers with young kids.

For Fishing: Edward Medard Conservation Park

Distance from Valrico: 15 minutes east (6140 Turkey Creek Rd, Plant City) Admission: $2 per vehicle

Edward Medard's 770-acre reservoir is one of the best freshwater fishing spots in the Tampa Bay area. Largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish are the main targets. You can fish from the bank, bring a canoe or kayak, or rent a boat. The reservoir is calm, flat, and perfect for a quiet morning with a rod.

The Singing Bluffs Trail offers elevated views over the reservoir and is one of the best birding spots in eastern Hillsborough County. Expect to see ospreys, herons, and in winter, migrating warblers.

For Hiking: Balm-Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve

Distance from Valrico: 20 minutes south (13998 Balm Boyette Rd, Lithia) Admission: Free

This 5,723-acre preserve is one of the largest natural areas in Hillsborough County. It has over 14 miles of multi-use trails through sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, and oak hammocks. The trails are shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians.

The terrain is sandy (this is Florida scrub, after all), so wear appropriate footwear. But the scenery is beautiful -- especially in late fall and early spring when the scrub jays are active and the wildflowers are blooming.

For Horseback Riding: Alafia River State Park (Equestrian Trails)

Distance from Valrico: 15 minutes south Trail access: 20 miles of designated equestrian trails

If you ride or want to try horseback riding, Alafia's equestrian trails wind through some of the most scenic terrain in the region. The hilly landscape (unusual for Florida) makes for interesting rides, and the trail system is well-marked and maintained. Several local stables offer guided trail rides for beginners.

For Birding: Circle B Bar Reserve

Distance from Valrico: 30 minutes east (4399 Winter Lake Rd, Lakeland) Admission: Free

Technically in Polk County, but worth the drive for serious birders. Circle B Bar Reserve is 1,267 acres of lakeshore, marsh, and hammock that attracts an extraordinary diversity of birds. The Alligator Alley boardwalk trail is famous for close encounters with alligators basking along the path. Bring binoculars and a camera.

Gear Up Locally

  • REI Tampa (Dale Mabry location) for kayaks, hiking gear, and bike accessories
  • Canoe Outpost - Alafia River for kayak and canoe rentals with shuttle service
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market on Bloomingdale Ave for quick sunscreen, water, and bug spray runs

The Bottom Line

You don't have to drive to the coast or to Orlando to have an outdoor adventure. Within 30 minutes of your front door in Valrico, you can be mountain biking on hilly terrain, swimming in a 72-degree spring, kayaking a scenic river, or hiking through 5,700+ acres of wilderness. That's one of the best things about living here -- the suburbs give way to real Florida faster than you'd think.
