What's happening in our community
Valrico This Week — May 6, 2026
Local News You Should Know About
This week's news cycle has been a mixed bag, as usual for our neck of the woods. On the positive side, there's a solid push happening to support local businesses along McMullen Road. If you haven't checked out what's available right there in our backyard, now's a good time. Small businesses are the heartbeat of Valrico, and frankly, they deserve our support.
Over in Brandon, there's been a major redevelopment happening with Tessera Senior Community being reimagined as Ambiance at Brandon. It's good to see older properties getting new life and purpose, especially when they're focused on serving our senior community. As someone who works in real estate, I always appreciate seeing thoughtful redevelopment projects that improve our region.
On the tougher side of things, we've had some serious incidents this week that hit close to home. Animal abuse allegations, dangerous wildlife encounters—a gator decided to take a leisurely stroll right up to someone's front door in Westchase—and a couple of tragic traffic accidents. The Temple Terrace crash involving a former officer and the early morning collision in St. Pete have been sobering reminders that safety on our roads matters. And there was an incident in the Everglades involving someone allegedly shooting an alligator on video, which authorities are taking seriously.
Brush fires along I-75 up in Hernando County shut down southbound lanes earlier this week, and we've had some concerning behavior caught on camera—including someone chasing after a kid on a dirt bike. It's a lot to process, honestly. These stories remind us why community matters and why looking out for each other is important.
What's Happening Around Town
If you're looking for ways to get involved in Valrico this week, supporting those local businesses on McMullen Road is a great start. Shop where your neighbors work. Eat where your friends own restaurants. That's where real community happens.
With the weather warming up—we're looking at mostly sunny, hot, and dry conditions for the rest of the work week—it's a perfect time to get outside and enjoy what our community has to offer. Just be mindful of that heat and stay hydrated. And if you're spending time near any waterways or natural areas, keep an eye out. Wildlife encounters are becoming more frequent as development continues.
Real Estate Quick Take
The spring market is holding steady here in Valrico. We're seeing solid interest in homes with mature properties and good setbacks from the road—partly because folks want that peace and quiet, and frankly, a little distance from the hustle and bustle doesn't hurt. If you've been thinking about listing or buying, these next few weeks are prime time before the summer heat really kicks in.
Until Next Week
That's your Valrico rundown for this week. It's been eventful, to say the least. Make sure you're checking in on your neighbors, supporting our local businesses, and staying safe out there. I'll be back next week with more updates from around town.
Stay cool out there,
