What's Happening In Our Community
It's been a heavy week for Hillsborough County news, and I want to start by acknowledging the serious incidents that have affected our neighbors. A Sarasota man has been arrested in connection with a double homicide in the Artistry neighborhood here in Valrico—a sobering reminder that safety matters in everything we do as a community. Our thoughts are with the families impacted by this tragedy and the law enforcement officers who worked to bring this to resolution.
On a more somber but important note, we honored our fallen service members this week during Hillsborough County's Memorial Day ceremony. If you didn't make it, these events are crucial for remembering the sacrifices made by those who served our country. They're also good reminders to show appreciation to the veterans and active-duty personnel living right here in Valrico.
Beyond the difficult headlines, there's been plenty of infrastructure activity. The Limona and Victoria intersection is closing June 1st, so if that's part of your daily route, start planning an alternate way now. Meanwhile, S. Kings Avenue is getting some work done with night shifts and lane adjustments—not the most exciting stuff, but it means better roads ahead. A train derailment earlier this week blocked roads in Hillsborough County for several hours, which fortunately didn't impact our area directly, but it's a reminder of how quickly things can disrupt traffic patterns around here.
Community Building And Looking Ahead
One of the stories that really inspired me this week was reading about Habitat for Humanity's Pope Leo Village over in Brandon. These projects matter. They create stable housing and community for families who need a real shot at homeownership. If you're looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities or ways to give back, Habitat is always looking for help.
The ABWC (I'm assuming this is a local business or civic group) just honored 18 students with scholarships at their final luncheon—congratulations to those winners! It's great to see local organizations investing in our next generation.
With hurricane season ramping up, agencies and residents across Hillsborough County are getting their preparations in order. If you haven't already, now's the time to review your evacuation plan, stock supplies, and make sure your property is ready. Living in Florida means respecting hurricane season, and being prepared isn't optional—it's just smart.
The Real Estate Pulse
The "Eye On Business — SouthShore, May 2026" report came out this week, and there's continued activity in our market. Valrico remains a solid area for families and buyers looking for that sweet spot between suburban living and proximity to Tampa. Inventory is moving, and properties that are priced right and well-maintained aren't sitting long these days.
What's Next
Keep an eye on that Limona and Victoria closure starting June 1st—plan ahead if you use that intersection regularly. And seriously, don't sleep on hurricane prep. We're heading into the season, and Mother Nature doesn't give second chances.
As always, if you're thinking about buying, selling, or just want to talk real estate in Valrico, my door is always open. Until next week, stay safe out there.
