Drywall Repair in Tampa Bay: Holes, Cracks, Water Damage, and When to Call a Pro
June 8, 2026
What Causes Drywall Damage in Florida Homes?
Drywall damage is one of the most common issues in Tampa Bay homes, and Florida's climate makes it happen faster and more often than in other parts of the country. The usual culprits are doorknob holes from doors without stoppers, nail pops from settling, hairline cracks at corners and seams, and water damage from roof leaks, plumbing issues, or overflowing AC condensate drain lines. If you live in a Florida home long enough, you will deal with all of them.
The good news is that most drywall damage is fixable, and a lot of it falls into DIY territory. The key is knowing which problems you can handle with a trip to Home Depot and which ones need professional attention.
How Do You Fix Small Holes in Drywall?
Small holes -- nail holes, picture hanging anchors, minor dings -- are the easiest drywall fix and a solid beginner DIY project.
For holes smaller than a quarter inch:
- Apply a small amount of lightweight spackle directly into the hole with a putty knife
- Smooth it flush with the wall surface
- Let it dry completely (usually 1-2 hours; spackle shrinks as it dries, so you may need a second thin coat)
- Sand lightly with 120-grit sandpaper until smooth
- Spot-prime the patch with a small brush
- Touch up with matching wall paint
For holes up to about 3 inches (doorknob damage, small accidents):
- Clean up any loose drywall around the hole
- Apply a self-adhesive mesh drywall patch over the hole (these come in various sizes at any hardware store)
- Apply joint compound (mud) over the patch with a 6-inch drywall knife, feathering the edges outward
- Let it dry (joint compound takes longer than spackle -- usually overnight)
- Sand smooth, apply a second thin coat, sand again
- Prime and paint
The mesh patch method works well for holes up to about 4-5 inches. Beyond that, you are looking at cutting out the damaged section and installing a new piece of drywall.
How Do You Handle Larger Drywall Holes?
Holes bigger than 5-6 inches -- the kind caused by a doorknob going through, a plumbing access cut, or accidental damage from moving furniture -- need a proper patch with new drywall.
The process:
- Cut a clean rectangle around the damaged area using a drywall saw
- Install backing strips (thin wood pieces behind the opening for the patch to screw into)
- Cut a new piece of drywall to fit the opening
- Screw the patch to the backing strips
- Tape the seams with paper drywall tape
- Apply three coats of joint compound, sanding between each coat and feathering wider each time
- Prime and paint
This is where many DIYers hit a wall (no pun intended). Getting the joint compound smooth, the seams invisible, and the texture to match the surrounding wall takes practice. If you have never done it before, a small closet or bathroom wall is a good place to learn. A visible living room wall is not.
What About Settling Cracks and Nail Pops?
Florida homes settle. Between the sandy soil, temperature swings, and the sheer volume of new construction built quickly, settling cracks are normal. You will see them most often at the corners of door and window frames, where walls meet ceilings, and along drywall seams.
Hairline cracks: Clean the crack, apply a thin bead of paintable caulk, smooth with a wet finger, let it dry, and paint. Caulk is better than joint compound for these because it flexes with the movement. Joint compound will crack again.
Wider cracks along seams (tape failure): If you can see the paper tape pulling away from the wall, the repair is more involved. You need to cut away the failed tape, re-tape the seam with mesh or paper tape, apply fresh joint compound, sand, and paint. This happens more in Florida because humidity can weaken the bond of the original tape over time.
Nail pops: These are the small circles or bumps you see where a drywall nail or screw has pushed through the surface. The fix is straightforward: drive a new drywall screw about 2 inches above and below the popped nail to resecure the drywall to the stud, then remove or countersink the popped nail. Spackle over all three spots, sand, prime, and paint.
How Does Water Damage Affect Drywall in Florida?
Water damage is the most serious drywall issue, and in Florida, it is also the most common. The three main sources:
AC condensate drain overflow. When the drain line clogs (and in Florida's humidity, it will clog), water backs up into the drain pan. If the pan overflows, water runs down into walls and ceilings. You will see a water stain or soft spot on the ceiling below the air handler, usually in a hallway or closet.
Roof leaks. After any major storm, check ceilings for discoloration, bubbling, or soft spots. Even a small roof leak during a heavy Florida rain can put a significant amount of water into your ceiling drywall.
Plumbing leaks. Slow leaks under sinks, behind toilets, and inside walls from supply lines or drain pipes. These are sneaky because the damage accumulates over weeks or months before you notice.
Critical rule for water-damaged drywall in Florida: check for mold first. Our humidity means that mold can start growing on wet drywall within 24-48 hours. If you pull back damaged drywall and see black, green, or fuzzy growth, stop. Mold remediation is not a DIY job. You need a professional who can assess the extent of the mold, contain it properly, and remove affected materials safely.
If the drywall is water-stained but structurally sound (it feels firm, not soft or crumbly), and there is no mold, you can prime the stain with a shellac-based stain blocker (like Zinsser BIN) and repaint. Water stains will bleed through regular paint and primer. Shellac-based primer is the only thing that reliably seals them.
If the drywall is soft, sagging, or crumbling, the damaged section needs to be cut out and replaced. Fix the water source first, let everything dry completely, then make the drywall repair.
What About Texture Matching?
This is the hardest part of drywall repair, and it is the main reason most homeowners call a professional. Central Florida homes have various textures -- orange peel, knockdown, smooth, skip trowel, and popcorn ceilings (though most people are removing those).
Orange peel is the most common wall texture in Tampa Bay homes. It looks like the surface of an orange and is applied with a hopper gun. Matching it with a can of spray-on texture from the hardware store is possible for small patches, but getting a consistent pattern takes practice. Buy an extra piece of drywall to practice on before spraying your actual wall.
Knockdown is also common. It starts as a splatter texture, then is lightly flattened (knocked down) with a wide knife. This is harder to match than orange peel because the pattern is less uniform.
Smooth walls are actually the hardest to patch invisibly because there is no texture to hide the seam. The joint compound work has to be perfect.
Tip: When patching a textured wall, apply the texture to a slightly wider area than just the patch. Feathering the texture into the surrounding wall makes the transition less noticeable. And always prime and paint the entire wall, not just the patched spot -- touch-up paint almost never matches perfectly, even with the same can.
When Should You DIY vs. Call a Pro?
DIY-friendly:
- Small nail holes and dings (spackle and paint)
- Doorknob holes with a mesh patch kit
- Hairline settling cracks with caulk
- Nail pops
Call a professional:
- Water-damaged drywall (especially if mold is possible)
- Large holes requiring a drywall cutout and replacement
- Texture matching on visible walls
- Ceiling repairs (overhead work is difficult and the results are very visible)
- Multiple patches in the same room (at that point, it makes more sense to have a pro handle all of them at once)
- Any damage near electrical outlets, switches, or plumbing (you do not want to accidentally cut into a wire or pipe)
What Does Drywall Repair Cost in Tampa Bay?
Professional drywall repair pricing varies based on the scope:
- Small patch (doorknob hole, under 6 inches): $75-$150 per patch
- Medium patch (6-12 inches, includes texture matching): $150-$300
- Large section replacement: $300-$600+ depending on size
- Water damage repair (section removal and replacement): $400-$800+ depending on extent
- Ceiling repair: Generally 20-30% more than wall repair due to difficulty
Most handyman services have a minimum service call charge ($75-$150), so it makes sense to batch multiple small repairs into a single visit rather than calling out separately for each one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just paint over water stains without repairing anything? Only if the drywall underneath is structurally sound. Press on it -- if it is firm, you can seal the stain with a shellac-based primer (Zinsser BIN is the standard) and repaint. If it is soft, spongy, or crumbling, the damaged section needs to be replaced. Never paint over active water damage without fixing the source first, or you are just hiding a problem that will get worse.
How do I know if there is mold behind my drywall? Warning signs include a musty smell, persistent water stains that keep reappearing, discoloration that spreads, and visible mold on the surface or edges of the drywall. If you suspect mold, cut a small inspection hole in an inconspicuous area and look behind the drywall with a flashlight. If you see mold growth on the back of the drywall or on the studs, call a professional. Florida humidity makes mold a serious and fast-moving problem.
Why do my drywall repairs keep cracking? If cracks reappear in the same spot, the underlying cause has not been addressed. Settling cracks will continue to move. Use flexible caulk instead of rigid joint compound for cracks that are caused by structural movement. For tape seams that keep failing, the original taping job may have been poor quality, and the seam needs to be fully re-taped with mesh tape and fresh compound.
Can I match my wall texture with spray cans from the hardware store? For small patches, yes. Products like Homax wall texture in a spray can work reasonably well for orange peel. The trick is adjusting the nozzle and spraying from the right distance. Always practice on cardboard first and let it dry before judging the match -- wet texture looks different than dry. For larger areas or knockdown texture, the spray cans are less effective and a hopper gun setup produces better results.
