The Real Cost of Owning a Pool in Valrico

February 10, 2026

How much does it really cost to own a pool in Valrico?

Between $250 and $450 per month when you account for everything — maintenance, electricity, chemicals, insurance, and saving for the big-ticket repairs. Most pool owners only think about the monthly service bill. The real number is significantly higher.

I sell homes with pools every month in Valrico. Roughly 60% of the homes in our area have one. And the number one question I get from buyers relocating from up north is: "How much does a pool actually cost?" Here is the honest breakdown.

Monthly Pool Service: $100-$200/month

If you hire a weekly pool service — and in Florida, you should — expect to pay $100 to $200 per month depending on the size of your pool and the level of service.

Basic service ($100-$130/month): Weekly chemical balancing, skimming, brush walls, empty baskets, check equipment. This is what most Valrico pool owners pay.

Full service ($150-$200/month): Everything above plus vacuuming, filter cleaning, and minor equipment adjustments.

Some homeowners maintain their own pools to save money. It is doable, but it takes 2-3 hours per week and you need to understand water chemistry. Florida heat, rain, and humidity make pool chemistry less forgiving than up north. One week of neglect and you can go from clear to green.

Electricity: $65-$100/month

Your pool pump is the second-largest energy consumer in your home after your air conditioner. A standard single-speed pump running 8-12 hours per day will add $65 to $100 per month to your TECO bill.

Tip: A variable-speed pump costs $1,200 to $2,500 to install but can cut your pool electricity costs by 50-70%. If your pump is more than 7-8 years old, the upgrade pays for itself in 2-3 years. Most new construction in Valrico comes with variable-speed pumps already installed.

Chemicals: $30-$50/month

Chlorine, muriatic acid, stabilizer, shock, algaecide. If you use a salt system, your chemical costs are lower (roughly $20-$30/month) but you have the upfront cost of the salt cell ($200-$800) and replacement every 3-5 years.

Florida rain dilutes your pool chemistry constantly. After a heavy afternoon thunderstorm — which happens almost daily from June through September — you may need to shock the pool and rebalance. Budget for more chemicals in summer than winter.

Insurance Impact: $30-$75/month

Your homeowner's insurance will increase when you have a pool. The added liability (drowning risk, slip-and-fall) and the added structure (the pool itself, the cage, the equipment) bump your premium by $360 to $900 per year, depending on your carrier and whether you have a fence or screen enclosure.

A screened pool enclosure (which most Valrico pools have) can actually help lower your insurance premium slightly compared to an open pool, because it reduces the drowning risk to children and wildlife.

Screen Enclosure Maintenance: $0-$200/year (plus eventual rescreening)

Florida pool cages take a beating from sun, wind, and storms. The screening material degrades over time and individual panels rip.

  • Single panel repair: $80 to $200 per panel
  • Full pool cage rescreening (fiberglass): $900 to $1,600 for a standard single-story cage
  • Full rescreening (polyester/premium): $2,700 to $4,500
  • Two-story enclosure rescreening: Add 30-50% to those numbers

Plan to rescreen your entire pool cage every 8-12 years. After a hurricane season with significant wind, you may need individual panels replaced sooner.

The Big-Ticket Items (Save for These)

This is where pool ownership gets expensive. These do not happen every year, but they happen to every pool eventually.

Pool Resurfacing: $5,000-$10,000

Plaster pool surfaces need resurfacing every 10-15 years. You will know it is time when the surface feels rough, stains will not come out, and you are losing water faster than normal.

  • Standard white plaster: $5,000-$7,000
  • Quartz or pebble finish: $7,000-$10,000

Pool Equipment Replacement

  • Pool pump: $800-$2,500 (variable-speed on the high end)
  • Pool heater: $2,000-$4,000 installed (heat pumps are most common in Florida)
  • Salt chlorine generator cell: $200-$800 every 3-5 years
  • Pool filter: $500-$1,500 depending on type

Deck Resurfacing: $3,000-$8,000

Concrete pool decks crack and stain over time. Resurfacing with a cool deck or travertine paver overlay runs $3,000 to $8,000 depending on square footage.

The Real Monthly Number

Here is what it actually looks like:

| Category | Monthly Cost | |----------|-------------| | Pool service | $100-$200 | | Electricity | $65-$100 | | Chemicals (if DIY) | $30-$50 | | Insurance increase | $30-$75 | | Screen enclosure reserve | $15-$25 | | Resurfacing reserve | $40-$80 | | Equipment reserve | $25-$50 | | Total | $305-$580 |

The average Valrico pool owner is realistically spending $350-$450 per month when you factor in everything, including saving for the inevitable big repairs.

Does a Pool Add Value to Your Home?

In Valrico, yes — but not dollar-for-dollar. A pool adds roughly $15,000 to $30,000 to a home's value in our market, depending on the pool's condition, size, and features. The cost to build a new pool is $35,000 to $70,000+. So you do not recoup the full construction cost, but you do get a lifestyle upgrade and a feature that most Valrico buyers expect.

Homes without pools in neighborhoods where every other home has one can sit on the market longer. In Valrico, having a pool is closer to a baseline expectation than a luxury upgrade.

FAQ

Is a pool worth it in Valrico?

For most families, yes. You will use it 9-10 months per year. The cost is real, but so is the lifestyle. Just budget for the true cost, not just the monthly service bill.

How often should I run my pool pump?

In Florida summer, 8-12 hours per day. In winter, 6-8 hours. A variable-speed pump can run longer at lower speeds for better circulation and lower cost.

Does a salt pool cost less to maintain?

Slightly less on chemicals, but the salt cell replacement every 3-5 years roughly evens it out. The main advantage of salt is comfort — the water feels softer and does not smell like chlorine.
