If you work in the Polk County or central Florida area, Lakeland makes more sense — you get more house for the money and a walkable downtown that Valrico doesn't have. If you work in Tampa Bay or want Tampa Bay access for entertainment, shopping, and beaches, Valrico wins on location. The I-4 corridor between the two is a viable commute in off-peak hours but can be brutal during rush hour in either direction.
