Porch Pirates in Valrico: How to Protect Your Packages
April 7, 2026
Package Theft Is Real Here
Porch piracy is not just a big-city problem. Valrico residents have reported stolen packages in multiple neighborhoods, especially during holiday seasons and major sale events. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has fielded increasing reports across the 33594 and 33596 ZIP codes.
What You Can Do
Use delivery lockers or pickup points. Amazon Locker locations exist at several spots near Valrico. You can also ship to a UPS Store or FedEx Office for pickup.
Require a signature. For high-value items, require signature confirmation. It adds a small cost but eliminates the porch drop problem entirely.
Install a video doorbell. The Ring Video Doorbell is what most Valrico residents use — it sends a notification to your phone the second someone steps on your porch, and the HCSO has used Ring footage to identify and arrest package thieves multiple times.
Add a security camera covering your driveway and porch. A wireless outdoor security camera gives you a wider angle than a doorbell camera and catches vehicles and license plates. Having both a doorbell cam and a wider security camera is the setup I recommend.
Get a package lockbox. A porch package delivery box sits by your front door and gives drivers a secure place to drop packages. It locks after the package goes in. Simple, effective, and cheaper than replacing stolen items.
Coordinate with neighbors. If you know a package is coming and you will not be home, ask a neighbor to grab it. Nextdoor and neighborhood Facebook groups are good for this.
Ship to your workplace. If your employer allows it, shipping to your office eliminates the risk entirely.
Time your deliveries. Many carriers let you choose a delivery window or hold packages at a facility for pickup.
If Your Package Is Stolen
- File a report with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office: (813) 247-8200 (non-emergency)
- Contact the retailer for a replacement or refund
- File a claim with the shipping carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx)
- Check your doorbell camera or ask neighbors for footage
- Post on Nextdoor to alert your neighborhood
Stay Alert
If you see someone taking packages from porches, do not confront them. Note the vehicle description, direction of travel, and any identifying details, then call HCSO non-emergency at (813) 247-8200. If the theft is in progress, call 911.
