Friday Night Lights: Newsome Wolves Football Preview

February 5, 2026

How did the Newsome Wolves do in football this season?

The Newsome Wolves finished the 2025 season at 3-7 overall and 1-3 in district play, placing 5th in 7A District 7. It was a rebuilding year. But if you have been to a game at Tom Stocker Stadium, you know the record does not tell the whole story of what Friday nights mean to this community.

The 2025 Season Recap

Head coach Jeff Turner's squad faced a tough schedule in Class 7A, one of the largest classifications in Florida high school football. Here is how the season played out:

Notable Games

Newsome 35, Alonso 14 — The best performance of the season. The Wolves dominated on both sides of the ball and showed what this team was capable of when everything clicked. The offense put up 35 points with a balanced attack.

Newsome 35, Middleton 26 — Another strong offensive showing. Back-to-back wins in mid-October gave the team momentum and the fan base something to cheer about after a rough start.

Newsome 24, Strawberry Crest 28 — A four-point loss that could have gone either way. This was the heartbreaker of the season. The Wolves had chances to close it out and came up just short against a solid Strawberry Crest team.

Newsome 21, Durant 50 — The rivalry game against Durant did not go the Wolves' way. Durant came in hot and controlled the game from the second quarter on. The Battle of Valrico went to the Wildcats this year.

Newsome 6, Plant City 34 — Plant City was the district powerhouse, and the scoreboard showed it. A tough matchup against a team that was simply more physical on both lines.

Key Players to Watch

Statistical leaders from the 2025 season included Carson Brockmeier Jr. and Tre Curatelli Jr., who were among the top contributors on offense. With several underclassmen getting significant playing time this season, the development should pay dividends in 2026.

About Newsome High School Football

Newsome High School opened in 2005 and has built a competitive football program in a relatively short time. The Wolves play in the FHSAA Class 7A and compete in a district that includes Durant, Strawberry Crest, Plant City, and other Hillsborough County programs.

The school is located at 16550 FishHawk Boulevard in Lithia, drawing students from FishHawk Ranch, parts of Valrico, and the Lithia area. The football stadium — Tom Stocker Stadium — is the Friday night destination for families across the community.

The Rivalry: Newsome vs. Durant

The biggest game on the Wolves' schedule every year is the matchup against Durant High School. Durant is just a few miles up the road, and the two schools share a boundary that splits Valrico roughly in half. Students who grew up on the same Little League teams end up on opposite sidelines. The rivalry game typically draws the largest crowd of the season for both schools.

Durant took the 2025 matchup 50-21, but the series has been competitive over the years.

What Friday Nights Are Really Like

If you have not been to a high school football game in Valrico, you are missing one of the best community experiences in the area. Here is what to expect:

  • Gates open about an hour before kickoff. Get there early for parking. The lot fills up for rivalry games and homecoming.
  • Concession stand food is exactly what you would expect. Hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, candy. Bring cash.
  • The student section is loud. The Wolves' student section brings energy even in a down year. The band and dance team perform at halftime.
  • Families spread out on the visitor side. If you want more space and less noise, the visitor bleachers are usually less packed for home games.
  • It is hot early in the season. August and September games start at 7:30 PM, but the temperature is still in the upper 80s at kickoff. Bring water.

Looking Ahead to 2026

A 3-7 season is nobody's goal, but rebuilding years happen. Coach Turner has experience developing young talent, and the Wolves' underclassmen got significant reps this season. The 2026 schedule has not been fully released, but expect the Durant rivalry game to circle back around in October.

Keep an eye on the Wolves. Valrico football is not going anywhere.
