Valrico Middle Schools and High Schools — What Parents Need to Know
June 17, 2026
Once your kids age out of elementary school in Valrico, the stakes feel higher. Middle school sets the academic trajectory, and high school determines college readiness, extracurricular opportunities, and -- for many families -- where you want to live. Here's a direct look at the middle and high schools serving Valrico, Lithia, FishHawk, and the surrounding communities.
Middle Schools in the Valrico Area
Burns Middle School
Location: 215 N Kingsway Rd, Seffner, FL 33584
Burns Middle serves parts of central Valrico and Seffner. The school offers a Cambridge program -- an internationally recognized advanced curriculum -- that attracts academically motivated students from across the area. Cambridge students take rigorous courses that prepare them for AP-level work in high school.
Burns has solid extracurricular offerings, including competitive academic teams and a growing athletics program. The school feeds primarily into Bloomingdale High School. If your child qualifies for Cambridge, Burns is one of the strongest middle school options in the area.
Barrington Middle School
Location: 5505 Providence Rd, Riverview, FL 33578
Barrington Middle serves the Bloomingdale neighborhood and parts of southern Valrico. The school has consistently earned A grades from the state and maintains a reputation for strong academics and discipline.
Barrington offers advanced coursework, an active band and chorus program, and competitive sports teams. The school feeds into Bloomingdale High School. Parents frequently cite the school's communication with families and its structured approach to classroom management as strengths.
Boyette Springs Middle School (proposed)
The Hillsborough County School District has discussed building a new middle school to serve the Boyette Road corridor and parts of Riverview/FishHawk. As of mid-2026, this campus is still in the planning phase. Families in the southern Valrico and FishHawk area should monitor district announcements for updates on timelines and boundary assignments.
Randall Middle School
Location: 4305 Lithia Pinecrest Rd, Lithia, FL 33547
Randall Middle is the feeder school for Newsome High and serves much of the FishHawk and Lithia corridor. The school consistently earns top grades and offers a Cambridge program that is widely considered one of the best in the district.
Randall's parent involvement is exceptionally high, and the school benefits from the demographics of the FishHawk Ranch community. Athletics are strong across the board, and the school's academic teams regularly compete at the county and state level. If you're looking at homes in the Newsome High zone, Randall is the middle school your child will likely attend.

Bloomingdale High School
Location: 1700 E Bloomingdale Ave, Valrico, FL 33596
Bloomingdale High is the traditional high school for much of Valrico, Bloomingdale, and parts of Brandon. The Bulls have a proud tradition that spans decades, and the campus is one of the larger high schools in east Hillsborough County.
Academics: Bloomingdale offers a full slate of AP courses, dual enrollment options through Hillsborough Community College, and AICE (Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education) coursework. The AICE program is a significant draw -- students who complete it earn a weighted GPA boost and an internationally recognized diploma.
Athletics: Bloomingdale has strong programs in football, swimming (Keely Finan earned the Henry Hicks Memorial Award in 2025), cross country, and track. The school's facilities include a recently updated athletic complex.
Arts: The Bloomingdale theater program is one of the best in the county, consistently winning district and regional competitions. The band program also has a strong reputation.
Graduation rate: Bloomingdale's graduation rate has hovered in the high 80s to low 90s in recent years, roughly in line with the county average. The AICE program tends to push graduation rates higher for students enrolled in advanced tracks.
Newsome High School
Location: 16550 FishHawk Blvd, Lithia, FL 33547
Newsome High opened in 2005 and has quickly become one of the most sought-after high schools in Hillsborough County. The Wolves serve FishHawk Ranch, parts of Lithia, and the southern edges of Valrico.
Academics: Newsome offers over 20 AP courses, dual enrollment, and a highly regarded Cambridge (AICE) program. The school consistently earns A grades from the state and posts some of the highest standardized test scores in the district. US News & World Report has repeatedly ranked Newsome among the top high schools in Florida.
Athletics: Newsome's athletic program is a powerhouse. In the 2024-2025 season alone, the Wolves won district championships in volleyball, swimming (both boys and girls), cross country, golf, soccer, basketball, track, lacrosse, tennis, and baseball. The swim program posted a combined 21-1 record, the best in school history.
Arts: The Newsome theater and music programs are competitive, with students regularly qualifying for All-County and All-State ensembles.
Graduation rate: Newsome consistently posts graduation rates above 95%, well above the county and state averages.
The trade-off: Homes in the Newsome zone carry a significant price premium. Families regularly pay $30,000 to $80,000 more for a comparable home inside the Newsome boundary versus just outside it. That premium reflects the school's academic reputation, athletic success, and the desirability of the FishHawk community.
How to Check Your School Zone
Hillsborough County redraws school boundaries periodically, and the most recent changes took effect for the 2026-2027 year. Never rely on a real estate listing to tell you which school zone a home falls in. Instead:
- Go to hillsboroughschools.org
- Use the "Find My School" tool
- Enter the home address to see the current zoned elementary, middle, and high school
This takes 30 seconds and can save you from an expensive mistake.
AP and IB Programs: What's Available?
Hillsborough County does not currently offer a full IB (International Baccalaureate) program at Valrico-area high schools. However, both Bloomingdale and Newsome offer the AICE/Cambridge program, which serves a similar purpose -- rigorous, internationally recognized coursework that carries college credit and weighted GPA points.
If IB is specifically important to your family, the closest IB programs are at Middleton High School (Tampa) and Hillsborough High School (Tampa). Both are accessible through the district's school choice program, though transportation is the family's responsibility.
For most Valrico families, the AP and AICE offerings at Bloomingdale and Newsome more than cover the bases for college-prep rigor.
What About Sports?
Both Bloomingdale and Newsome compete in FHSAA Class 4A, which is the largest classification in Florida high school sports. The rivalry between the two schools is real and drives competition across every sport.
Newsome has been the dominant athletic program in recent years, but Bloomingdale holds its own -- particularly in swimming, theater (yes, competitive theater exists), and cross country. For families with serious athletes, both schools offer pathways to college recruitment, especially in swimming, baseball, soccer, and track.
FAQ
Which is the better high school -- Bloomingdale or Newsome? Both are strong schools. Newsome has higher test scores, a higher graduation rate, and more recent athletic success. Bloomingdale offers a larger, more established campus with a longer tradition and a strong AICE program. The "better" school depends on what matters most to your family.
Can my child attend Newsome High if we live outside the zone? Possibly. Hillsborough County's school choice program allows families to apply for schools outside their zone, but acceptance depends on available capacity. Newsome is frequently at or near capacity, making choice transfers competitive.
What middle school feeds into Newsome High? Randall Middle School is the primary feeder for Newsome High School.
Are there any new schools being built in the Valrico area? The district has discussed a new middle school along the Boyette Road corridor. As of mid-2026, it remains in the planning stage. Check the Hillsborough County School District website for the latest updates.
