7 Best Parks and Playgrounds in Valrico and Brandon for Families

If you have kids in Valrico or Brandon, you already know the drill: by 9 a.m. on Saturday, everyone is bouncing off the walls and you need somewhere to go. The good news is that our corner of Hillsborough County has some genuinely great parks -- not just open fields with a rusty swing set, but parks with splash pads, kayak launches, nature trails, and playgrounds that actually tire kids out.

Here are seven parks local families keep coming back to, ranked by how much your kids will beg to stay "just five more minutes."

1. Bloomingdale East Park (Valrico)

Location: 3800 Erindale Dr, Valrico, FL 33596

This is the neighborhood park that punches above its weight. Bloomingdale East has a colorful, modern playground with equipment for toddlers and older kids, a connected walking trail, and open fields big enough for soccer or flag football. There's a shaded seating area where parents can actually sit and relax. It's also dog-friendly (on leash), so you can bring the whole family.

Pro tip: The trail connects to a larger greenway path -- great for bike rides with training wheels.

2. Brandon Regional Park (Westfield Park)

Location: 502 Sadie St, Brandon, FL 33511

This is the all-star of Brandon parks. The playground is modern and well-maintained, there's a free splash pad that runs during warmer months (basically March through November here in Florida), open fields, and shaded picnic pavilions. It also has basketball courts, a walking path, and clean restrooms -- a rare but important feature.

Best for: Families with mixed-age kids. The splash pad keeps toddlers busy while older kids hit the playground.

3. Edward Medard Conservation Park

Location: 6140 Turkey Creek Rd, Plant City, FL 33567

About 15 minutes east of Valrico, Edward Medard is where you go when you want actual nature -- not just a manicured park. The 1,284-acre park surrounds a reservoir that's excellent for fishing (largemouth bass, bream, catfish) and kayaking. The Singing Bluffs Trail is hilly by Florida standards and offers scenic overlooks and documented nesting bird colonies.

Best for: Families with kids 6 and up who want a real outdoor adventure. Bring bug spray.

4. Valrico Park

Location: 6225 Valrico Rd, Valrico, FL 33594

Right in the heart of Valrico, this park features dual playgrounds built for different age groups, covered pavilions, full-size basketball courts, and expansive shaded lawns. The mature oak trees provide natural shade that you won't find at newer parks, and there are picnic tables scattered throughout.

Pro tip: This park fills up fast on Saturday mornings when youth sports leagues are practicing. Weekday evenings are the sweet spot.

5. Lithia Springs Park

Location: 3932 Lithia Springs Rd, Lithia, FL 33547

The natural spring-fed swimming area is the main draw here, and it's worth the short drive from Valrico. The water stays a refreshing 72 degrees year-round. There's also a playground, volleyball courts, fishing areas, and picnic facilities. Admission is $2 per vehicle (up to 8 people), plus $2 per person for the swimming area.

Best for: Hot summer days when you need cold water. Get there early on weekends -- the parking lot fills up by 10 a.m.

6. Alafia River State Park

Location: 14326 S County Rd 39, Lithia, FL 33547

This is the hidden gem for active families. Alafia River State Park sits on reclaimed phosphate mining land, which means the terrain is surprisingly hilly -- unusual for Florida. It's a hot spot for mountain biking with IMBA-rated trails, but also has 20 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, 24 named lakes, and full camping facilities. Playgrounds and picnic areas with grills round out the family amenities.

Best for: Families who want a full day outdoors. Pack a cooler and plan to stay.

7. Saladino Dog Park (Brandon)

Location: 1705 Bryan Rd, Brandon, FL 33511

Technically a dog park, but the Bertha and Tony Saladino Park complex is a solid family outing. The dog park section is fully fenced with separate areas for large and small dogs, drinking water stations, and shaded seating. The larger park complex includes a playground, walking paths, and restrooms. Open sunrise to sunset.

Best for: Families with dogs who want to tire out both the kids and the pup in one trip.

Tips for Park Visits in Valrico

  • Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Even in winter, Florida UV is strong enough to burn.
  • Bring water. Not all parks have working water fountains.
  • Check for event closures. Brandon Regional Park and Valrico Park frequently host youth sports tournaments on weekends.
  • Bug spray after 4 p.m. Mosquitoes in our area get aggressive at dusk, especially near water.
