February 25, 2026
Where are the dog parks near Valrico?
Saladino Dog Park in Brandon is the closest dedicated off-leash dog park to Valrico — about 10 minutes west on SR-60. Beyond that, there are several off-leash parks, dog-friendly trails, and private rental options within 20 minutes.
Valrico doesn't have its own dedicated dog park within the CDP boundaries, but you're not far from good options.
Off-leash dog parks
Saladino Dog Park
Address: 1705 Bryan Rd, Brandon, FL 33511 Distance from Valrico: ~10 minutes Hours: Sunrise to sunset Cost: Free
The go-to for Valrico dog owners. Saladino is a 2.6-acre fenced park divided into two sections — one for large dogs, one for small dogs. Features include:
- Double-gated entries (so your dog can't bolt when someone opens the gate)
- Water stations for dogs
- Shaded benches for humans
- Waste bag dispensers and trash cans
- Flat, grassy terrain
The park gets busiest on weekend mornings and weekday evenings after work. Early morning (before 8 AM) and midday are the quietest times. The large dog area can get intense when it's crowded — if your dog is on the timid side, aim for off-peak hours.
Verdict: Solid, well-maintained, convenient. The best option for regular off-leash visits.
West Dog Park
Address: 6402 Occident St, Tampa, FL 33614 Distance from Valrico: ~25 minutes Hours: Sunrise to sunset Cost: Free
Hillsborough County's first official dog park, and it's worth the drive if you want more space. Five acres with a 6-foot galvanized chain link fence, separate large and small dog areas, and double-gated entries. More room to roam than Saladino.
Verdict: Best for dogs that need space to sprint. Worth the drive for weekend visits.
Jim Urbanski Dog Park at Al Lopez Park
Address: 4810 N Himes Ave, Tampa, FL 33614 Distance from Valrico: ~25 minutes Hours: Sunrise to sunset Cost: Free
Located inside Al Lopez Park, this dog park has separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, dog water fountains, and shade structures. The surrounding Al Lopez Park is a nice spot for a walk before or after off-leash time.
Verdict: A good Tampa option if you're already on that side of town.
Dog Park at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park
Address: 600 N Ashley Dr, Tampa, FL 33602 Distance from Valrico: ~30 minutes Hours: Sunrise to 10 PM Cost: Free
A fully fenced dog park with artificial turf, agility equipment, and drinking water right on the Tampa waterfront. It's small but well-maintained and unique for its downtown location. Great if you're combining a dog outing with a walk along the Tampa Riverwalk.
Verdict: Small but fun, especially the agility equipment. Good for a Tampa day trip with your dog.
Ott's Off-Leash Dog Sanctuary
Address: Ruskin, FL (south of Riverview) Distance from Valrico: ~25 minutes Hours: Check for current schedule Cost: Small fee
A private off-leash park with separate small dog area, shade, benches, swings, and picnic tables. Cleaner and less crowded than public dog parks because of the fee and smaller community of regulars.
Verdict: Worth the drive if you want a calmer, less chaotic off-leash experience.
Dog-friendly trails and parks (on-leash)
Edward Medard Conservation Park
Address: 6140 Turkey Creek Rd, Plant City Distance: ~10 minutes east of Valrico
Dogs on leash are welcome on the trails. Miles of flat, shaded paths around the reservoir. Bring water for your dog — it gets hot, and the trails are long enough for a real workout.
Boyette Springs Park
Address: 11820 Boyette Rd, Riverview Distance: ~15 minutes south
Nature trails in a more rural setting. Good for dogs who like to sniff and explore. On-leash only.
Alderman's Ford Park
Address: 100 Alderman's Ford Park Dr, Lithia, FL 33547 Distance: ~15 minutes east
Boardwalk trails through cypress swamps. Dogs on leash allowed. Keep them on the boardwalk and away from the water (alligators live in the Alafia River).
Brandon Parkway Trail
Distance: ~10 minutes west
A paved multi-use trail that's popular for walking and biking. Dogs on leash welcome. Flat, accessible, and connects to the Brandon Farmers Market area on Saturday mornings.

Tips for dog owners in Valrico
- Heat awareness: Florida heat is dangerous for dogs. Avoid walks between 11 AM and 4 PM from May through September. Asphalt can burn paw pads — if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their feet.
- Alligators are real. Don't let your dog swim in any pond, lake, canal, or river in Florida without checking first. Alligators live in virtually every body of freshwater.
- Heartworm prevention is year-round. Mosquitoes don't take a winter break in Florida. Keep your dog on heartworm prevention 12 months a year.
- Pick up after your dog. This shouldn't need saying, but Saladino Dog Park regulars will tell you it does. Grab a roll of biodegradable dog waste bags — they're cheap, and running out at the park is not a good look.
- Hydration. Bring water for your dog on any outdoor outing. A collapsible silicone travel bowl clips right to your leash and weighs nothing.
- Use a proper leash. For on-leash trails like Alderman's Ford, a 6-foot hands-free running leash gives your dog room to explore while keeping you in control. Retractable leashes are a bad idea on trails — they snag on brush and give you zero control near wildlife.
