Things to Do in Valrico FL: The Complete Guide

March 4, 2026

What is there to do in Valrico FL?

More than people expect, but it's not Tampa. Valrico is a residential suburb at heart, and its strengths are outdoor spaces, local restaurants, community events, and its proximity to Tampa, St. Pete, and the Gulf beaches. The people who love living here have figured out the mix of local activities and short drives to bigger attractions.

Here's the honest, complete guide.

Outdoor activities

This is where Valrico shines. The area is surrounded by parks, preserves, and waterways.

Parks and trails

  • Edward Medard Conservation Park — 1,284 acres with fishing, kayaking, and trails around a reservoir. Best nature experience within 15 minutes of Valrico.
  • Alafia River State Park — Mountain biking, hiking, and camping on terrain with actual hills. 17+ miles of trails.
  • Lithia Springs Park — Natural spring-fed swimming hole, 72 degrees year-round. Essential summer spot.
  • Alderman's Ford Park — Boardwalk trails through cypress swamps along the Alafia River.
  • Valrico Park — Playgrounds, basketball courts, community gathering spot.
  • Brandon Regional Park — Free splash pad, modern playground, great for young families.

Kayaking and paddling

The Alafia River is the local paddling destination. Put-in points at Lithia Springs, Alderman's Ford, and near Edward Medard offer different stretches of the river. You'll see turtles, osprey, and the occasional alligator. Bring your own kayak or rent from local outfitters.

Fishing

Edward Medard's reservoir is stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, and bream. Bank fishing and boat fishing are both available. Florida freshwater fishing license required (available online at gooutdoorsflorida.com).

Golf

The Bloomingdale Golfers Club is an 18-hole championship course set among 100-year-old oaks and mature pines. It's been ranked among Florida's top public courses. Buckhorn Springs Golf & Country Club and River Hills Country Club are also nearby.

  • Downtown St. Pete — 45 minutes. Growing nightlife scene with craft cocktail bars and live music venues.
  • Sparkman Wharf — 25 minutes. Tampa waterfront with restaurants, bars, and an outdoor container park.

FAQ

Is Valrico boring?

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want walkable nightlife and urban energy, yes. If you want outdoor activities, good food, community events, and easy access to Tampa Bay attractions, no. Most people who live here chose the trade-off intentionally.

What's the closest beach to Valrico?

Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach are both about 50-60 minutes by car. Ben T. Davis Beach on the Courtney Campbell Causeway is technically closer (about 30 minutes) but is a man-made bay beach, not a Gulf beach.

Is there anything to do in Valrico at night?

Bullfrog Creek Brewing, The Landing, and a few restaurants stay open late. For anything beyond that, Tampa and Ybor City are 25 minutes away.
