Seeds of Hope: The Bloomingdale Food Bank Feeding Families Every Thursday

Every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., something quietly remarkable happens at 710 East Bloomingdale Avenue in Brandon. Volunteers at Seeds of Hope, housed at the Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale, hand out boxes of food to community members who need it.

No judgment. No paperwork gauntlet. Just food for families.

In a community known for good schools, well-kept neighborhoods, and suburban comfort, it's easy to assume everyone is doing fine. But food insecurity exists in every zip code -- including 33596 and 33511. Seeds of Hope is one of the organizations making sure that when someone in Bloomingdale, Valrico, or Brandon is struggling, help is literally around the corner.

What Seeds of Hope Does

Seeds of Hope operates as a community food bank and outreach ministry. Their primary service is the weekly food distribution every Thursday evening. Families and individuals can come to the church, receive a box of groceries, and go home with enough food to bridge the gap.

The organization partners with local food banks, grocery stores, and community donors to stock their shelves. Volunteers sort, pack, and distribute the food each week.

Beyond the food bank, Seeds of Hope hosts community events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds:

  • Soup for the Soul -- An annual dinner event held at the church. The March 2026 gathering brought community members together for a shared meal and fellowship.
  • Music Bingo Night -- A fundraising event (March 26, 2026) that combines bingo with music trivia for prizes and laughs. It's one of their most popular events, drawing supporters from across the Bloomingdale and FishHawk area.
  • Holiday drives -- Seasonal food and gift drives around Thanksgiving and Christmas ensure families have what they need during the holidays.

Who It Serves

Seeds of Hope serves anyone in the community who needs food assistance. You don't need to be a church member. You don't need to prove your income. You show up, and you receive food.

The people who come through the line each Thursday represent a cross-section of the community: seniors on fixed incomes, families dealing with a job loss or unexpected medical bills, single parents stretching every dollar, and sometimes families who are just having a rough month. Food insecurity isn't always chronic -- sometimes it's a temporary crisis that anyone can face.

According to Feeding Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County has a food insecurity rate of approximately 12%, meaning roughly 1 in 8 residents doesn't always have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. In a county of 1.5 million people, that's a significant number -- and the suburbs aren't exempt.

How You Can Help

Seeds of Hope runs on volunteers and donations. Here's how to get involved:

Volunteer Your Time

  • Thursday food distribution: Help sort, pack, and hand out food boxes. Show up at 4:30 p.m. to set up.
  • Event support: Music Bingo Night, Soup for the Soul, and holiday drives all need volunteers for setup, serving, and cleanup.
  • Regular sorting: Donated food needs to be organized and stored throughout the week.

Donate Food

Non-perishable food items are always needed. The most-requested items include:

  • Canned proteins (tuna, chicken, beans)
  • Rice and pasta
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Cereal and oatmeal
  • Cooking oil

Drop off donations at the Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale during office hours or on Thursday evenings.

Donate Funds

Financial donations allow Seeds of Hope to purchase fresh produce, dairy, and meat -- items that food drives rarely collect but families desperately need. Even $25 goes a long way. Visit sohopefl.org for donation information.

Spread the Word

If you know someone in the Bloomingdale, Valrico, or Brandon area who's going through a tough time, let them know about Thursday distributions. Sometimes the hardest part of getting help is knowing it exists.

Why This Matters for Our Community

There's a certain kind of community pride that comes from knowing your neighbors have each other's backs. Seeds of Hope represents that. It's not a large nonprofit with a national marketing budget. It's a group of local people who decided that no one in their neighborhood should go hungry, and then they did something about it.

For high school students in the area, volunteering at Seeds of Hope counts toward the community service hours required for Florida's Bright Futures Scholarship. The Bloomingdale Neighborhood Association also maintains a volunteer registry that connects residents with local service opportunities like this one.
