A Friday evening fire tore through a two-story sober living home on East Lumsden Road in Valrico, leaving 12 men in recovery without a place to live and erasing years of personal belongings, photos, and progress in a matter of minutes.
The home was operated by 7 Summit Pathways, a Tampa Bay rehabilitation program that uses transitional housing to help men coming out of treatment rebuild their lives. According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, crews were dispatched at 5:19 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the rear of the house. Firefighters had the flames knocked down within 15 minutes, but the damage was already done — residents and program leadership say the house is a total loss.
One of the residents was inside when he smelled smoke. He tried to put it out, realized quickly it was beyond his ability to control, got out, and called 911. No injuries were reported.
Investigators believe the fire started somewhere in the rear of the home, but the flames consumed any evidence that would point to an exact cause. The official determination from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue: undetermined.
What This Place Was
For the 12 men living there, this wasn't just a roof over their head. It was a structured, sober environment — a step between treatment and independent life. One resident had been there nine years and had worked his way up to director of maintenance for the facility. He told WFLA that this stretch was the first time he came into recovery actually wanting it to stick.
That's what makes the loss heavier than a typical house fire. Recovery housing isn't easy to replace overnight. Routines, sponsors, accountability partners, proximity to meetings — all of it is tied to where you live.
Where the Residents Are Now
Heather Martin, executive director of the program, said her team placed all 12 men in an Airbnb through the end of the month while they search for permanent housing. That gives them a couple of weeks to figure out next steps — but anyone familiar with Tampa Bay's rental market knows finding stable, affordable, sober-friendly housing for a group this size in a short window is a tall order.
How Valrico Can Help
If you want to support the residents and the program, here are practical ways to plug in:
- Reach out to 7 Summit Pathways directly to ask about donation needs (clothing, toiletries, gift cards, furniture for the next house).
- Landlords and property owners in the Brandon/Valrico/Riverview area — if you have a rental property that could work as transitional housing, this is exactly the moment to make a call.
- Local businesses can offer gift cards, meals, or services to help the men get back on their feet.
We'll update this post as more information comes in on where to send help directly.
