When should you file for Florida homestead exemption after moving?
Answered by Stephanie C.
You must file for homestead exemption by March 1 of the year you want the exemption to apply, and you must have owned and occupied the home as your primary residence on January 1 of that year. If you close on your Valrico home in November, you can file for homestead by March 1 of the following year. Filing is done through the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser's office — it's free and saves you up to $50,000 off your assessed value.
