What's Happening in Our Community

Local community news and happenings

This week reminded us all how quickly things can change on our roads. A Mother's Day tragedy unfolded when a college student heading home for the holiday suffered severe, incapacitating injuries after a tire blowout on I-275 near St. Pete. The northbound lanes got shut down as emergency crews responded, and honestly, it's a sobering reminder to get your vehicle maintenance checked regularly. On a related note, Tampa police are dealing with their own serious matter after a police officer was accused of driving with a BAC twice the legal limit. These incidents highlight why road safety matters so much in our community.

On the brighter side, there's been some real positive momentum locally. Rodgers Middle School's robotics team just won the state championship—that's the kind of news that makes you proud to live here. Our kids are competing at the highest levels and bringing home the hardware. Meanwhile, HCA Brandon Hospital announced scholarship recipients this week, including two students receiving $20,000 awards. That's meaningful support for the next generation.

Healthcare access is also expanding in our area. All Children's Outpatient Care just opened a new location in Apollo Beach, which means families around here have better access to pediatric services without traveling as far. And if you've been concerned about flooding—which many of us have—the commissioners approved a $95 million flood protection program. That's real investment in keeping our community safer during those heavy rain seasons we know are coming.

Summer's Coming—Here Are Your Camp Options

Summer activities and community events

If you're already thinking about summer camp for the kids, the Firehouse Cultural Center has your answer. They're rolling out ten weeks of summer camps with options for different ages and interests. It's a great way to keep kids engaged during the break, and honestly, these local camps are usually way more personalized than the big chain operations. Worth checking out if you haven't already.

A Quick Word on the Market

Modern home exterior

The Valrico market continues to show steady interest as we head into late spring. Homes are moving, buyers are active, and if you've been thinking about listing, this is a solid window before we hit the summer slowdown. If you want to talk about what your home might be worth or what's available in the area, you know where to find me.

Until Next Week

That's what caught my attention this week around Valrico and our surrounding communities. It's been a week of highs and lows—some scary moments on the road, some real community wins with our students and healthcare expansion. That's life in Florida, I guess. Always something happening.

Stay safe out there, keep an eye on your vehicle maintenance, and if you see any of those Rodgers Middle robotics kids around town, give them a shout-out. They've earned it.

See you next week.
