What is Gibsonton FL and what is it known for?

Answered by Tom E.

Gibsonton — locally called Gibtown — is a small unincorporated community on Tampa Bay between Riverview and Ruskin with a legendary history as a winter home for traveling carnival and circus workers. For decades it had special zoning that allowed residents to keep exotic animals and circus equipment on residential properties, giving it a uniquely colorful reputation. Today it's increasingly a working-class suburban community, but the folklore lives on.

What is the South Shore area of Tampa Bay?

South Shore is a broad term locals use for the communities south of Brandon and east of Tampa along Tampa Bay's southeastern shoreline — including Riverview, Gibsonton, Ruskin, Apollo Beach, and Sun City Center. It's one of the fastest-growing suburban corridors in the state, driven by affordability, waterfront access, and good highway connections to Tampa and Sarasota. The area has transformed dramatically over the past 15 years.

What is Apollo Beach FL like?

Apollo Beach is a waterfront community on Tampa Bay between Riverview and Ruskin with direct bay access, a marina, and a growing residential base. The manatee viewing area at TECO's Manatee Viewing Center is a major draw — hundreds of manatees gather in the warm discharge waters in winter and it's one of the best free wildlife experiences in Florida. The housing market mixes older waterfront homes with new master-planned developments.

What is the Ruskin and Sun City Center area like?

Ruskin is an agricultural and working-class community on the Little Manatee River about 25 miles south of Tampa, known for its tomato farms and access to the river and Tampa Bay. Sun City Center, adjacent to Ruskin, is one of the largest 55+ retirement communities in the country with golf cart-accessible neighborhoods and a full suite of amenities for active retirees. If you're not 55+, Sun City Center isn't really for you, but Ruskin has affordable family housing nearby.

What parks are in south Hillsborough County near Riverview?

South Hillsborough has Alafia River State Park in Lithia, E.G. Simmons Regional Park in Ruskin (great for fishing and camping on Tampa Bay), and Little Manatee River State Park near Wimauma for kayaking and hiking. Boyette Springs Park and other community parks are scattered throughout Riverview's neighborhoods. The Tampa Bay shoreline along Apollo Beach and Ruskin also provides informal access to the bay.
