What's happening in our community

Valrico This Week — June 8, 2026

It's been a heavy week in our corner of Hillsborough County, folks. While we've got some really positive things happening in the community—like celebrating our nation's 250th birthday and recognizing some outstanding high school graduates—the news cycle has been dominated by a string of serious traffic incidents that hit closer to home than any of us would like.

Safety Concerns Dominate Local Headlines

I'm not one to dwell on negative news, but when you see multiple fatal crashes and hit-and-run investigations happening in Brandon, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, and St. Petersburg all in the same week, it's hard to ignore. A DUI-related crash in Lutz left two people dead and resulted in an arrest. Meanwhile, Tampa police are actively searching for a driver in a deadly hit-and-run, and Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal motorcycle collision in Wesley Chapel where the driver reportedly left the scene.

Then there's the incident in St. Pete where a car crashed into a home and caught it on fire, with the driver still unaccounted for. These aren't just statistics—they're real tragedies affecting real families in our area.

What strikes me about all this is the reminder we all need that the roads we drive on daily deserve our full attention and respect. I know I'm preaching to the choir for most of you, but if there's anything we can take from this week's headlines, it's that distracted or impaired driving doesn't just hurt the driver—it devastates entire communities.

A Moment for the Good News

Not everything this week has been grim. The Tampa Riverwalk is gearing up to celebrate America's 250th birthday, which feels especially meaningful given everything else happening around us. There's something grounding about coming together as a community to mark important milestones, especially when we're living through challenging times.

I also want to give a shout-out to the area's high school graduates, particularly the valedictorians and salutatorians from Bloomingdale and FishHawk. These young people represent our future, and watching them achieve these academic honors gives me genuine hope. They're heading into a complex world, but they're doing it with solid preparation and, clearly, the kind of drive it takes to excel.

The Real Estate Side of Things

From a real estate perspective, weeks like this one remind us why location and safety matter so much when you're looking at homes in Brandon and Valrico. Our area has so much to offer—good schools, growing development, and strong community ties—but like any rapidly developing region, we've got to stay mindful of traffic patterns and infrastructure as we continue to grow. If you're shopping for a home in our market, it's worth having conversations about neighborhood safety, school routes, and commute options before you make a decision.

Looking Ahead

I don't have a crystal ball for what next week will bring, but I know it'll likely be quieter than this one. That said, keep an eye on local news, look out for your neighbors, and if you see something that doesn't sit right with you on the roads, report it. We're all responsible for keeping our community safe.

If you've been thinking about making a move to or within the Valrico area—whether it's upgrading your current home, downsizing, or just exploring what's out there—I'd love to chat. Real estate is always on my mind, but honestly, so is building the kind of community where we all feel secure and connected.

Stay safe out there, friends.
